Prior to the 1990s, Britain was not seen as a destination for foodies. British fare was boiled and boring, making curries the default choice. How things have changed!
According to Tim Zagat, co-founder of the restaurant survey guides that bear his name, "Thirty years ago the food here was a joke but today London is one of the top five cities for dining out in the world."
Let's consider a national top ten list:

1. Dinner by Heston Blumenthal at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, London
Reserve early. A full three months prior to opening day on Jan. 31, Dinner was fully booked. One of only four chefs to ever be awarded four Michelin stars in Britain, Blumenthal created an upmarket brasserie serving traditionally-inspired British dishes accompanied by their own fully researched historical footnotes, with names like Salagumundy and Rice & Flesh. 2. The Ledbury, London

How can it be that the famous Roux brothers' Le Gavroche has been around since April 1967 and is still consistently top-rated? It also has a Guinness Book of World Record for the most expensive dinner bill in 1997. 6. The Waterside Inn, Bray, Berkshire
Run by Alain Roux, son of Michel, (see Le Gavroche) nestled on the banks of the Thames in a 16th century village. Colleges that are slashing tuition costs

At least six colleges announced plans to reduce tuition costs in the upcoming school year. Many of these schools say lower-cost higher-education will attract more students from middle-income families those with incomes too high to qualify for free federal financial aid, but not high enough to pay for college costs without going deep into debt. "We are hoping to recruit more students from that group than in the past," says Edwin Welch, president of University of Charleston, in West Virginia, which is slashing tuition by 22%. Others are looking to lure students away from nearby colleges that up to now have been more affordable, says Mark Kantrowitz, publisher of FinAid.org, which tracks financial aid issues.

To be sure, the discounts may not make these private colleges more affordable than public colleges. The average annual cost of tuition and fees at a four-year public college for in-state students this year is $8,244, according to the College Board. Of the private colleges cutting tuition, Seton Hall University in South Orange, N.J., will offer the lowest tuition (roughly $10,000) for incoming freshmen with high grades.

The cuts come as the average annual cost of tuition and fees at a four-year private university for the current academic year is $28,500 -- a 15% increase from five years ago. Meanwhile, college savings plans haven't been able to keep up with the rate of tuition inflation largely due to the choppy market over the past few years. "We felt it imperative to respond to the economic environment and what we are hearing from students and their parents," says Marie Angelella George, president of Cabrini College, near Philadelphia, which is lowering tuition by nearly 13%.

Here's a rundown of six colleges lowering tuition next year.

Cabrini College
Tuition cut: 12.5%

Tuition and fees in 2012-13: $29,000 (down from $33,176 this year)

Located near Philadelphia, Cabrini College lowered annual tuition for the upcoming school year below $30,000 with the hope of attracting students who would otherwise look for a cheaper alternative. And tuition isn't expected to go up anytime soon: The college has pledged to keep tuition and fees under $30,000 for at least three academic years, through May 2015. The tuition cut applies to all undergraduate students.

Financial aid totaled $18.3 million for undergrads this year, and while aid for next year hasn't been determined yet, the school vows not to reduce scholarships for returning students. "We anticipate that the vast majority of students, both new and continuing, will pay less next year than this year," says a university spokesman.

Room and board, which average $11,742 this year, are estimated to rise by 1% next year.

Tuition cut: 24%

Tuition and fees in 2012-13: $17,480 (down from $23,000 this year)

As the cost of attending Lincoln College kept rising, the school noticed fewer students were enrolling. By the current academic year, the total number of students enrolled at the Lincoln, Ill.-based institution fell below the 1,300 threshold the school always maintained to about 1,275, says Tony Cardenas, vice president for enrollment management and student services. Hit by sticker shock -- the cost of tuition, fees, room and board is $29,000 this year -- "parents weren't giving us a second look, so we knew we had to make an adjustment," he says.

The school cut tuition for the upcoming year (and will keep room and board unchanged at $7,000). Cardenas says applications are already higher than they were a year ago.

Financial aid will likely change though, he says. This year the school gave out roughly $7 million in non-loan aid to students, an amount likely to drop as a result of the tuition cut.

University of Charleston
Tuition cut: 22%

Tuition and fees in 2012-13: $20,700 (down from $26,200)

When the stock market plummeted in August and worries about another recession returned, a number of incoming freshmen scheduled to start at the University of Charleston in the fall called to cancel their enrollment, says Edwin Welch, president of the University of Charleston in West Virginia. Many of these students said they would attend more affordable colleges, he says.

In an attempt to hold on to students and to assuage parents' financial concerns, the university decided to reduce tuition by 22% for new students and give at least $6,000 in free aid to all returning ones. That means students won't pay more than $19,500 out of pocket for tuition. (Fees will remain the same as this year at $1,200.)

Additional financial aid, however, will drop. This year the university gave out $15.5 million in free aid, slightly up from $15 million the year prior, but next year it could fall to $10 million, says Welch. He says that decrease would be equal to roughly the amount of aid the school's 1,000 undergrads will get with the tuition cut. And other costs will rise. Room and board, which averages $9,000 a year, will likely increase by 1% to 2%, he says.

William Peace University
Tuition cut: 7.7%

Tuition and fees in 2012-13: $23,900 (down from $25,900)

Among the many changes William Peace University in Raleigh, N.C., is implementing next year -- including converting from an all-girls college to a coed university -- will be lowering tuition for all undergrads. In a typical year, Duquesne University's School of Education enrolls 85 to 100 undergrads. But this year that number dropped to 60, says Paul-James Cukanna, associate provost for enrollment management. He says students who were planning to attend changed their minds after teacher cutbacks at schools throughout the country picked up. Their concern, he says, was going into debt to pay for high tuition and graduating without a job.

To lower the costs of obtaining an education degree and boost enrollment, the Pittsburgh, Pa.-based university decided to offer a grant equal to 50% of current tuition and fees to incoming education students.

Room and board will rise next year for all students by 3% to 4% from its current level of roughly $9,800.

Seton Hall University
Tuition and fees cut: roughly $21,000 for incoming high achieving freshmen

Tuition and fees in 2012-13: $10,104 (down from roughly $31,000)

To attract high-achieving students away from public colleges, South Orange, N.J.-based Seton Hall University is offering the same tuition costs as its state's largest public college, Rutgers University. The result is a 61% discount on Seton Hall tuition that equals more than $21,000 in savings for the upcoming academic year. The discount is strictly for incoming freshmen with top grades and SAT scores. "A lot of families think private education is out of their reach," says Alyssa McCloud, vice president of enrollment management. "We're trying to make it as affordable as public education."

The free financial aid the school gives out will remain unchanged at about $62 million a year. Room and board, which costs about $11,000 a year, will rise between 1% and 5% though the exact amount hasn't been determined yet, she says. Fees that are currently around $1,500 will rise by a similar amount, though unlike most schools they include free laptops for each student that get replaced with new ones after two years. source

Scientists digging in a Namibian national park have uncovered sponge-like fossils they say are the first animals, a discovery that would push the emergence of animal life back millions of years.

The tiny vase-shaped creatures' fossils were found in Namibia's Etosha National Park and other sites around the country in rocks between 760 and 550 million years old, a 10-member team of international researchers said in a paper published in the South African Journal of Science.

That means animals, previously thought to have emerged 600 million to 650 million years ago, actually appeared 100 million to 150 million years before that, the authors said.

It also means the hollow globs -- about the size of a dust speck and covered in holes that allowed fluid to pass in and out of their bodies -- were our ancestors, said co-author Tony Prave, a geologist at the University of St Andrews in Scotland.

"If one looks at the family tree and projects this backward to where you have what's called the stem group, the ancestor of all animals, then yes, this would be our great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandmother," he told AFP.

Prave said fossil evidence that animals emerged as long as 760 million years ago fit together neatly with what geneticists had hypothesised by looking at "molecular clocks", a means of gauging a species' age by looking at the percentage difference between its DNA and that of another species.

"The aspect of this that's rather satisfying, at least intellectually, is that it is in broad agreement with what geneticists would tell us based on looking at molecular clocks when we should see the first advent of large multi-cellular life forms," he said. source

"Trompe l'oeil" -- or art designed to trick the eye -- is the title of a new Paris exhibit exploring the history of illusion and pastiche, from ancient frescoes to fashion and the decorative arts.

The first known use of trompe l'oeil, as legend would have it, dates back to ancient Greece, in the fifth century BC, when the artist Zeuxis painted a bunch of grapes so realistic that a bird flew down to peck at them.
"It's a game between the creator and the viewer, it's all about reality and perception," said curator Veronique Belloir, summing up the subject of the show which runs for 18 months at the Paris Museum of Decorative Arts.
A small selection of paintings opens the display of more than 400 artefacts, one of them a surrealist closet by the French artist Marcel Jean, its imaginary doors cracked open to offer a glimpse of the landscape beyond.
But the core of the exhibit is the place of illusion in the decorative arts, which took off in the late 19th century when wallpaper for instance was used to imitate everything from ceramic to lace or lacquer.
"Imitation is one of the great themes of the decorative arts," said co-curator Dominique Fourest. "Cost is part of the reason, but not the whole story. This was also a way for creators to develop their virtuosity."
Technical innovations such as linoleum were used to reproduce floorboards or mosaic, while glass imitated onyx or malachite, and ceramic posed as wood, leather or woven reeds.
Late 19th century handbooks offered craftsmen exquisitely precise guides to imitating rare materials, such as specific types of marble, or decorative styles from ancient Greece to China or the Islamic world.
"It's an endless game," said Fourest.
Reaching back in history, trick jugs from the 16th century had holes pierced in the sides, the liquid poured through concealed double walls.
A thick pile of leather-bound books, mounted on a wooden stool, prises open to reveal a chamber pot, an 18th-century marvel of invention and coyness.
Fashion has also made copious use of the trompe l'oeil genre, starting in the 1920s with Italian designer Elsa Schiaparelli, who created knitted sweaters patterned with make-believe scarves or accessories.
"Fashion is quite unashamed to talk about faux-collars, false lashes, wigs and faux-crocodile," said Belloir.
Among a dozen anthology outfits on display is a sporty, zippered man's coat by Jean Paul Gaultier printed with the pattern of a tweed jacket.
Likewise a piece carried out for Chanel's haute couture collection in 1983, by the embroidery master Francois Lesage, imitates a set of jewellery.
There is also a woman's jumpsuit, created by Sonia Rykiel in 2008, with a classic dungaree top patterned on the front.
The fashion world's love affair with trompe l'oeil is highlighted by the exhibition's cover photograph, a 1973 snap of a man seated at a Paris cafe, a jacket painted onto his naked torso.
In a quirky twist, the curators discovered the story behind the picture on the eve of the opening, from the designer himself, Ruben Torres, who told them he drew clothes onto his models' bodies after failing to complete his collection on time for a fashion show. source

Festivals of all sorts have traditionally been an antidote to Europe’s long dreary winters. In Ghent, Belgium, four days at the end of January are devoted to celebrating light and chasing away the doldrums. “We bring light into people’s lives at the end of winter when the days are long and people start longing for spring,” says Kaat Heirbrant, coordinator of the Light Festival Ghent 2012 that ended January 29. The only light festival in Belgium, it is also one of the largest on the continent. The Fête de Lumières' in Lyon is the biggest.

This year marked Ghent’s second festival and organizers incorporated larger streets and squares to invite bigger installations. The 29 illuminations explored the theme of happiness and music but a massive cathedral constructed of more than 55,000 LED lights along Belfortstraat (Belfort Street) was the show stopper. Here Italian lighting experts Luminarie De Cagna erected a giant colonnade of wood and hundreds of thousands of colored lights. Lighted arches and ceiling vaults evoked Renaissance and Romanesque cathedrals. The arched entry — an imposing 28 meters high — led to a gallery of light and color that felt almost like a fairy tale come to life.

It would seem that such a display would ring up substantial energy costs but in reality the event causes barely a blip in the city’s energy consumption. During the festival some other lighting is turned off and many of the illuminations use low-energy LED lamps. One goal of the festival is to bring attention to energy consumption and the Ghent Light Plan which has enabled the city to reduce energy consumption for public lighting by 11 percent since 1999. Further economies are expected to yield an additional 20 percent savings, according to Heirbrant.

Massive creations such as Luminarie De Cagna’s are only part of this cultural event. A number of illuminations are interactive. Others are projected onto buildings and make a social statement or seemingly manipulate the facades.

The various displays are clustered in two areas of the city center. Public transportation to the varied locations is available but almost all of it is walkable. The city also makes additional storage sheds for bicycles available.

Attendance at the first festival was approximately 200,000, more than organizers anticipated. This year, they added an extra day and made that number more than doubled with an estimated 480,000 coming from Belgium as well as the Netherlands, the north of France and other neighboring countries.

The event gives visitors an opportunity to “experience Ghent in a unique way,” observes Hierbrant. Dates for the next festival have not been set.

Since the 1930s, Luminarie De Cagna has created lighting for special events. For Light Festival Ghent 2012, the Italian company transformed a section of Belfortstraat into a dramatic Renaissance cathedral. To create the illumination, which was hands down the show stopper, the company used curtains of LED lights joined together.

Typical Portuguese tiles inspired this illumination of ever changing patterns. The way the audience walks and moves determines the patterns projected onto the façade of St. Jacobs church. The goal was to reflect the movement of people in a city.

The public participated in this interactive display of glow sticks woven into a bench to form bands of light. If a glow stick broke, they made a wish. The end result: a bench full of wishes. Make a Wish Foundation benefited from the sale of glow sticks.

Passers-by were surprised by this quirky installation: a lone phone booth on a corner transformed into an aquarium. The phone still stands inside the booth, now filled with azure waters, colorful fish and wavy water plants.

The building appears to be burning in this display. Video images of fireplaces and fires projected from the inside give the illusion of flames in the first floor windows. The cathedral hovers in the background.

Lamprey's favorite destination is quiet Saint-Sauvant (population: 517), in the heart of cognac country: "It's my fantasy version of France." Saint-Sauvant is a quintessential 14th-century village, with a fortified tower, four winding streets, and only one place to stay, the Design Hôtel des Francs Garçons. Outside, the hotel looks like any medieval building: thick walls, wood shutters, and a tiled roof. But inside, a team of seven French, American, and British architects has transformed everything. The reception is a modernist forest with black-and-white wallpaper hand-printed with leafless trees. Out back, a swimming pool abuts the village's 12th-century Romanesque church, a French cultural monument. There's not much else to Saint-Sauvant, which is fine with Lamprey. "They have a pace of life I could get accustomed to," he says. "Lunch lasts for at least two hours, and it may just be two pieces of bread and some ham and cheese. Veley likes Lord Howe Island so much that he's been there twice. That means something for a man on a mission to collect every passport stamp in the world. The crescent-shaped island, a two-hour flight northeast of Sydney, is just seven miles from tip to tip, with a long white stretch of lagoon beach at its center and emerald green mountains at either end. Don't miss the starfish in the tide pools near the lagoon and the hand-fed fish at the lovely and secluded Neds Beach. Wherever you go, you're not going to get lost; there's just one main street and only 18 small-scale hotels such as the 19-room bungalow-style Leanda Lei Apartments. "It's just you and fabulous white sand with the most beautiful palm trees all around."

You need a four-wheel-drive vehicle to get to Keahiakawelo, which could easily stand in for the surface of Mars in a Hollywood blockbuster. On the northwest side of Lanai-the least populated of the Hawaiian Islands-the sweep of red rock gardens and giant boulders pops against a backdrop of blue skies and ocean. "I don't know of any place else like it," says Yong Ock Kim. "The wind actually rolls the rocks around." Being in Hawaii, you can certainly decamp to the beach, but it's far more interesting to visit with Kepa Maly, the executive director of the Lanai Culture & Heritage Center. "He makes the trip worth it," Kim says. "He knows all the stories."

Sucre has year-round high temperatures in the mid-70s and a collection of whitewashed buildings that have earned it the name La Ciudad Blanca. But it's the culture that Aviva found most alluring on a recent trip. "Even functional items like potato sacks were woven with lovely striped patterns," Aviva says. After checking into the Parador Santa Maria La Real, "a little hidden gem of a place" with vaulted brick ceilings and interior courtyards, Aviva headed to nearby Potosi and Tarabuco: "The women emerged from their houses and started asking if I wanted to see their tejidos (weavings). It's a great cultural exchange-and an opportunity to pick up some amazing textiles."

You won't want to go to Tusheti if you're afraid of heights. Hidden deep in the Caucasus Mountains, the region's villages cling to dizzyingly steep slopes that are as picturesque as they are precarious. That's all part of the allure to Bealby. Of Georgia's Tusheti region, the inveterate adventurer describes a land "with centuries-old defensive towers, mountaintop castles, and stone shrines," some of which, like Guest House Lamata, are being transformed into basic lodgings with simple wooden furniture. Newly open to visitors after the dissolution of the USSR and Georgia's Rose Revolution of 2003, Tusheti can now be explored on foot or from the saddle of a sure-footed horse. There are sheep grazing in almost every nook and cranny, from the rolling grasslands up near the ridged peaks down to the glacial lakes below them and all around the gorges coursing with white-water streams. You'll also pass through hamlets like Shenako, with a rough-hewn stone church and houses adorned with lacy wood balconies. At night, you'll be well entertained by the locals, whom Bealby describes as "the most hospitable and fun people in the world."

One of the best dinners of Kaufelt's life-and as a guy who essentially eats for a living, there have been plenty of great ones-was in the Piedmontese village of Verduno. "I was staying at the Castello di Verduno, and the restaurant there was just incredible," Kaufelt says. He describes plates full of white-truffled pasta dishes. Dinner was served in a red-walled dining room with soaring ceilings in a crumbling 18th-century castle. In good weather, you can decamp to the palm-dotted garden to sip Barolo made from local grapes and cellared in barrels beneath the hotel. The Castello makes an ideal base for a foodie pilgrimage through Piedmont. "The whole region is teeming with good food-I almost smashed up my car when a family of wild boars went running across the road in front of me once," Kaufelt says.

Before he opened his first Ace Hotel in Seattle in 1993, Calderwood threw a popular series of warehouse parties. His ability to define and create "cool" has organically grown into not just the Ace franchise, but also Rudy's, an old-school barbershop with 14 locations across the West Coast; and a marketing agency called Neverstop. To fuel all of his endeavors, Calderwood travels constantly. Over time, a theme has emerged: He's drawn to laid-back spots that blend high- and low-culture influences. Doe Bay, on Washington State's Orcas Island, is just his kind of place. "It's got a great blend of hippie kids mixed in with older hikers and naturalists," Calderwood says. The small inlet on the Pacific Ocean is home to an unassuming resort of the same name. "Doe Bay isn't a design spot. You're not going there to get pampered. There's nothing pretentious about it-and that's exactly what makes it great," Calderwood says. Doe Bay's reception building looks like an old general store-albeit one festooned with colorful flags-and beyond that there's a small clutch of yurts, campsites, and old-fashioned cabins sprinkled through the woods and along the shore. For Calderwood, it's the sauna and hot- and cold-water soaking pools that bring him back. "The pools sit on a platform that overlooks the most incredible view of the bay, with other islands off in the distance. When you're done with the pool, you can run down a little path and jump straight into the sound."

Scarborough has lived from Alaska to New Zealand, and she's touched down on all continents. But the one place that thrills her every time is the South African town of Wuppertal, four hours northeast of Cape Town. "It's a pure, wild scene," says Scarborough, who is often greeted by farmers lugging their produce to market on donkey carts. "The air has a very minerally quality, and you can see forever." Despite the arid landscape, there's water everywhere. "My favorite swimming hole on the entire planet is outside of town. It's a bit of a treacherous climb down the side of a cliff to reach the water, but once you descend you can sunbathe on a water-worn rock in the shallows, play under the waterfall, then rest in the shade of cedar trees with the big blue sky above you," Scarborough says. For the evening, she recommends staying in one of the town's several cottages or pitching a tent at the Algeria Campground on the Rondegat River. "I've never been to a more perfect place to gaze at the stars."

There are no roads to Namje. The only way to get to the Nepalese village is along a series of footpaths with views of Mount Makalu, the world's fifth-tallest peak. Not that getting to those footpaths is easy; you'll have to wrangle a flight from Kathmandu to the town of Biratnagar, which is itself an hour's drive from the trailhead. Buddha Air offers daily flights from Kathmandu to Biratnagar, the closest access point to Namje. It's no surprise that the place only sees a handful of outsiders a year. Odegard came upon it while she was searching for local women to harvest fiber for her rug company. "After my trip to Namje," she says, "I felt like I'd never been farther away from home." Namje's isolation has been its saving grace. "The native Magar people live very close to nature, and there's an incredible amount of spiritual activity," Odegard says. You can climb to the top of Thumki Hill and visit the sacred burial ground where the villagers, who still practice animism, worship their ancestors. Odegard suggests staying at the Hotel Himalaya and trekking the footpaths between villages to catch the stunning sunrises and sunsets.

An accomplished ultramarathoner, Holak thinks nothing of running 50 miles in a day. On a recent long-haul race to Dayton, Wyo., he discovered Buffalo and immediately decided it was one of his favorite outdoorsy gems: "Buffalo has that nice mix of cowboys and kayakers." The town's undiscovered status means you'll have the trails to yourself, and its superb location at the foot of the Bighorns offers immediate access to some of the best recreation areas in the country. "It's one of the closest jumping-off points for climbing Cloud Peak," Holak says; at 13,167 feet, Cloud Peak is the highest point in the Bighorn range. But even mellow day hikes are rewarded with dramatic endings here, such as the one found at Bucking Mule Falls, which plunges 600 feet down a steep rock face into Devil Canyon. Drives, too, are almost distractingly scenic. It's hard to top a cruise in the car out to Crazy Woman Canyon, where a narrow dirt road hugs a creek and steep rock walls cast a golden glow. Then there's the excellent rock climbing at Ten Sleep Canyon and the plentiful cross-country skiing trails in winter. It doesn't hurt that Main Street is movie-set picturesque, with rows of well-preserved mercantile shops and saloons from the late 1800s now transformed into art galleries and outdoor outfitters.

Florence’s Ponte Vecchio (which means “Old Bridge”), crosses the Arno River, and is an inhabited bridge, common in Europe during the Middle Ages when merchants and residences occupied the space. “The Ponte Vecchio is more than a bridge. It is a street, a marketplace, a public square, and an enduring icon of Florence,” Dupré writes. Today, she said, the bridge houses gold shops and, on the top level, the “secret” Vasari Corridor that Renaissance nobility once used to cross between the Pitti and Vecchio palaces. The bridge is considered to be the first segmental arch bridge built in the West, according to the Encyclopaedia Britannica and “is an outstanding engineering achievement of the European Middle Ages.” Built in 1345, it required fewer piers than the Roman semicircular-arch design, as the shallower segmental arch offered less obstruction to navigation and freer passage to floodwaters. Its design is generally attributed to Taddeo Gaddi, better known as a painter and pupil of Giotto. During World War II, it was the only bridge in Florence spared from destruction by German bombs, because Hitler took a fancy to it.

Spanish architect and engineer Santiago Calatrava's Sundial Bridge stretches across the Sacramento River in Redding, California, linking the two campuses of Turtle Bay Exploration Park. Opened in 2004, the bridge for pedestrians and bicyclists also serves as a gateway to the Sacramento River Trail system, and its soaring backward-leaning mast with cables stretched like the strings of a harp, is a working sundial, said David J. Brown, a bridge historian and author of Bridges: Three Thousand Years of Defying Nature. The bridge is also environmentally sensitive to its setting. The free-standing construction allows the bridge to avoid impacting the nearby salmon-spawning habitat, as there are no supports in the water, yet its glass-bottom encourages public appreciation of the river, according to Turtle Bay Exploration Park. The Sundial Bridge is one of about fifty -- and the first built in the United States -- designed by Calatrava, writes Brown.

Designed in 1502 by Leonardo da Vinci to span the “Golden Horn,” the famous waterway in Istanbul that separates Europe and Asia, the stone bridge was never built because the Turkish sultan feared that it was not technically feasible. A scaled down, laminated wood and stainless steel version based on the famous artist’s original plan is now a footbridge near Oslo, Norway. “For 500 years the beauty and symbolism of this graceful bridge remained an obscure drawing in one of Leonardo’s notebooks, until it was brought into being in Norway in 2001 by the contemporary artist Vebjorn Sand,” according to the website of The Leonardo Bridge Project, a global public arts project. Built in collaboration with the Norwegian transportation ministry, the bridge was the first civil engineering idea by Leonardo to be realized.

Rising above the clouds, the Millau Viaduct is the tallest road bridge in the world, said Brown, a bridge historian and author of Bridges. With its loftiest pier higher than the Eiffel Tower, it was financed by the same company that built the famous French monument. Conceived by engineer Michel Virlogeux and designed by architect Sir Norman Foster, the cable-stayed bridge (in which the deck is supported from towers by a series of cables), comprises seven concrete piers and a steel deck, and spans more than one-and-a-half miles across the valley of the river Tarn near Millau in southern France. Completed in 2004 after only three years' construction, the Millau Viaduct was created to have the "delicacy of a butterfly," said Foster in news reports. "A work of man must fuse with nature. The pillars had to look almost organic, like they had grown from the earth," said the English architect, who was interviewed by a regional paper and quoted in a BBC news report.

Ponte Sant’Angelo spanning the Tiber in Rome, one of the eight stone bridges the Romans are known to have built over the Tiber between 200 B.C. and A.D. 260, is the most celebrated of the six “massive beauties” still in use, said Judith Dupré, author of Bridges. “The Romans perfected the masonry arch,” she said, allowing them to span much greater distances than previously. “Much of Roman engineering genius is underwater, hidden from view, but their inventions — including the cofferdam, cutwater piers that divide water current, and pozzolano, a type of waterproof concrete—are still used today,” Dupré said. Ponte Sant’ Angelo, originally named for Hadrian, the emperor who reigned during its construction, leads to his mausoleum, Castel Sant’ Angelo, a popular tourist attraction in Rome.
